"Email is free, email marketing isn't"

A few weeks ago, I proposed the following question on Twitter:

Twitter Status

My favorite answer, compliments of Alex C. Williams of eROI, was: "Email is free, email marketing isn't."

Other answers included:

  • "Yes! Someone needs to educate them and who better to do it than you?!" from @email_queen
  • "They still make that model?" from @rlevans
  • "If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet." Where do you place value? from @jhertzberg
  • "You mean prospect thinks it shouldn't pay for the resources/time it consumes? would make me want to run screaming." from @evansmom

The answers to this questions serves as a good reminder that there is a big difference between email and email marketing.

The chart below is a brief comparison of what I believe to be the major differences:

Email v Email Marketing

Also, check out what Tamara Gielen posted to SlideShare on the very same topic. Notice the similarities! Great minds think alike.

Do you have more to add? What do you think are the differences between email and email marketing. Please let us know.
