November 8, 2013 -- Jim Davidson

Take a look at email marketing trends for the month of October 2013. Get insight into how brands are using email marketing and check out email volume, subject line, promotional tactics, and special character usage.

And so it begins!  October saw some of the busiest mailing days in months.  Not only were there five days when 50% or more retailers mailed, but the slowest days of the month were still quite busy. October is the crossroads of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Fall Promotions and Holiday Kickoffs.  This is also the month when subscribers start to feel the pain of an inbox that is getting busier and busier.

Take a look at email marketing trends for the month of September 2013. Get insight into how brands are using email marketing and check out email volume, subject line, promotional tactics, and special character usage.

As expected, September brought higher highs and higher lows.  Kicking off with a Labor Day surge and wrapping up (get it?) with early Holiday promotions, September is the opening bell to the holiday season.  Halloween is just the appetizer before inboxes become more stuffed than a Thanksgiving day turkey.

Eventful Inbox: Site Launch Announcements & Clunky Animation

October 25, 2013 -- Jim Davidson

Two tactics, animation and program launches, must grab the subscriber's attention while balancing the amount of information or flickering images in the design. I'm featuring a few examples from the past month that you can use to help navigate these popular, yet potentially off-putting strategies.

Site Launch Announcement Emails

Many brands are launching newly designed sites before the holiday rush.  While there are many technological advancements under the hood for many of these sites, the introduction of a new visual design, site functionalities and checkout changes can leave shoppers feeling disoriented.  Compared to your typical promotional emails, a site re-launch announcement email is asking your subscriber to invest more time once the email is opened.  Some of these emails will take the postcard / invitation to visit approach and, on the other end of the spectrum, others will make their subscribers part of the journey by sending pre-launch announcements months in advance.

It's September and many retailers will be kicking off holiday 2013 soon. By now, your holiday promotions are probably locked down and photo assets are being finalized.  As you are bringing everything together for some holiday magic, it's important to not leave email best practices under wraps. In this post, I want to highlight a couple tactics that I saw over the past month that will show up in consumers' overstuffed inboxes as the holidays start heating up.

While the inbox was buzzing in August, the fall season kick-offs and final back to school sales didn't result in any major volume spikes.  With many marketers rolling out their first holiday campaigns in September, expect to see these mountains start to climb all the way to December 25th.

Eventful Inbox: August

August 22, 2013 -- Jim Davidson

Confession: My clicking has been slacking. Yes, it's true. I have been actively opening each of the 6,000 or so emails I receive each month but, due to a busy summer, I have not been clicking as much. This has resulted in a few brands considering me inactive and dropping me from their lists. Somewhat shocking considering I have an active history with their brand and still open each email. PSA to revisit your definition of inactive subscribers.

Back to the click-slacking. I deiced to rededicate myself to the carpal tunnel educing clicking of each email with the enthusiasm of a gym goer on New Year's Day. The go-get-em gusto ended with vein-bursting frustration. So, allow me to step onto my soapbox and vent about how many brands made it a challenge to actually click in their emails.

Eventful Inbox: Animation, Ornaments and 3D Emails... Oh My!

July 15, 2013 -- Jim Davidson

While the snowfall of holiday emails may just be a flurry rather than a blizzard, many brands have started promoting holiday decorations and products that need customization like engraving or monogramming. I guess the early bird gets the deal and avoids production delays! Check out this latest edition of Eventful Inbox by Manager of Marketing Research, Jim Davidson.

It's July and we all know what that means, right?  Christmas is here!  No, I'm not just talking about "Christmas in July" promotions, but actual full-fledged holiday shopping emails.  While I'm at it, Happy Halloween!  It's time to get your costume, didn't ya know?

Email Marketing Trends for June 2013

July 3, 2013 -- Jim Davidson

Take a look at email marketing trends for the month of June 2013. Get insight into how brands are using email marketing and check out email volume, subject line, promotional tactics, and special character usage.

Dads & Grads didn't move the needle much in June.  With no other major holidays during the month, it would be expected to see some seasonal spikes boosting email volume for promotions related to Dads & Grads, yet the busiest day in June only tied the busiest day of the last three months.  Independence Day, Back to School and "Christmas in July" campaigns will certainly start the rise that will carry us through the end of the year.
