SMS is a great way to drive sign-ups because it’s such an effective and widespread medium – everyone has their mobile phone with them at all times.
So let’s say you’re sold on the idea of free list growth. You’ve picked a catchy keyword, and you’re ready to work on your creative – maybe something like…
"It's easy to join the [your company name] mailing list! Just text [your keyword] and your email address to 332-33."
Here are a few ideas to help you with your creative:
- Make the directions clear – Make sure that your keyword stands out above all else. Possibly repeat it at both the top and bottom of your creative.
- Clearly state the benefits – Use a bulleted list to quickly highlight what the subscriber will get by signing up. Offer an incentive – for example, a 10% off coupon they receive instantly via email.
- Create a sense of exclusivity – You want to make the subscriber feel like they are part of an insider community or elite group. Possibly call this out directly – for example, "Join the [your company name] Insiders."
Once you have your creative, how do you then spread the word and promote your campaign?
Here are some ideas for where you can advertise your Text-to-Join campaign to gain traction:
- Shipping receipts
- Shipping boxes
- Invoices
- Tradeshow materials
- Direct mail pieces
- Catalogs
- In-store signage
- Printed coupons in flyers
- YouTube videos
- Facebook/Twitter
If you have a bricks-and-mortar presence, make sure Text-to-Join is part of the checkout process at all store locations. Consider printing this on receipts and/or including a flyer that gets dropped in the customer’s bag (maybe in the shape of an iPhone).
Also, make use of signage and posters throughout your store – by mirrors, in the window-front, in dressing rooms, on flyers, etc. Use compelling, fun imagery.
